The Rotary Club of Bathurst supports many worthwile initiatives. One of those projects is the Upper Dawson Literacy Bridges Project, which will be completing its program for the year this month, before returning in the Fall.

Here is what the project is about, according to the group:

The Upper Dawson Literacy Bridges Project began in May, 2010 with the support of Bathurst Rotary, Social Development, School District 15, Bathurst High School Interact and the Upper Dawson Tenants Association. Children from the Upper Dawson Community come to the center once per month to hear a guest reader from the community read a chosen book. Craft activities centered around the theme of the book are then done by the children. Following the craft, children receive a lunch and get a copy of the book to take home for their own personal library. Research shows that children who have books of their own in their homes, are more likely to be successful in school and are more likely to remain in school longer, making this project extremely important for some of our neediest children in Bathurst.

Since the project’s inception, we have given out over 200 books and each child received a magazine subscription in December so that they would have reading material at their reading level arriving at their home on a monthly basis. The children are thrilled with the reading material they receive and we hear back from their schools about how the children bring their books to school to show their teachers. Our guest readers have included police officers, city councilors, teachers, and radio personalities helping to make this sometimes invisible community more visible and approachable.

The Rotary Club of Bathurst is proud to support this initiative. The Club is also proud of the involvement of the local Interact Club, who assists the volunteers every month.

The Bathurst Rotary Club is pleased to present the Paul Harris Fellowship Recognition Dinner on Wednesday, June 15, 2011 at the Gowan Brae Golf & Country Club. This year’s recipients are Emery LeBlanc and Robert “Bob” Comeau.

Join us for this premiere event. A cocktail reception will kick-off the celebration at 6:30 pm; followed by a dinner with guest speaker, Carl Duivenvorden at 7:00 pm. Tickets can be purchased for $30 at National Bank, Bank of Montreal, RBC and Gowan Brae.

Paul Harris founded Rotary in 1905 and the Paul Harris Fellowship was established in 1957 to honour those who have made substantial contributions to humanitarian and educational causes.

This year, the Bathurst Rotary Club is pleased to recognize Emery LeBlanc and Robert “Bob” Comeau with this prestigious distinction. The club will award $2,000 US to the Rotary Foundation on their behalf. These and other contributions will be used to fund humanitarian and educational areas all over the world.

This is a wonderful way to gather as a community, celebrate Rotary and the achievements of amazing individuals.

We hope to see you on the 15th of June.

Some of the service clubs in the region such as Richelieu, Rotary, and Knights of Columbus exist because they want to improve the community in which we live and work.

For the first time, these clubs are getting together to help save one of our greatest community winter sports activities. The Acadie-Bathurst Titan team has been entertaining the people of our region for more than 10 years. We can all agree that it is a unique opportunity for both linguistic communities to meet friends, share ideas and enjoy some wonderful moments. It is also very important to remember that the Acadie-Titan team provides national exposure for our region.

We believe it is necessary to get the excitement and the fans back to the K.C. Irving Centre. Fewer tickets are being sold for Titan games, and it is time to do something about it! We have to get our seventh player back into the game!
Here is what we are going to do:

  1. During the March 4th game (Cape Breton vs. Titan), the City has given us permission to organise free skating on the Richelieu rink from 5 pm to 6 pm.
  2. From 6 pm to 7 pm, there will be a Tailgate Party in the Paul Ouellette room with local musicians, pizza and pop.
  3. Then we’ll move on to the hockey game, where students from BHS and ESN will run fun activities to warm up the crowd.
  4. There will be a draw for a 2011-2012 season ticket at the March 4th and 11th games.
  5. We will be inviting all our service club members to bring two or three friends to the March 4th and March 11th games.

We hope that these great Titan games will be here for many more years for the enjoyment of our community.

Dawn to Dusk Food Drive: the results

Rotarians and Max 104.9 staff at the Dawn to Dusk Food Drive

The Dawn to Dusk Food Drive was a great success. The Bathurst Rotary Club with Max 104.9 and the Bathurst Youth Centre collected over 700 bags of food and 1 000$ in donations for the Bathurst Volunteer Centre.

This food drive came at an opportune time for the Volunteer Centre, as heating bills cause their demand to increase. We encourage everyone to contribute regularly.

The Food Drive was also a great day of fellowship for the Club and its friends and families (despite the cold)!

We hope to see all of you again next year (or sooner!)

Also: Check out the great photo album of the event on the official Max 104.9 website.
