Dear Colleagues:

Rotary is receiving significant international media coverage this week for its role in the historic polio-free certification of the World Health Organization’s South-East Asia region.

Highlights include:

·       CNN International: India beats the odds, beats polio

·       BBC.com : World now 80% polio free, World Health Organization says

·       The Guardian: India may be free of polio – but the disease hasn’t been eradicated yet (op-ed by Archie Panjabi)

·       Reuters: Q+A: India at risk until polio is eradicated globally-Rotary

·       The Wall Street Journal Online: Q&A: India Eliminates Polio

·       HuffPost Live:Violinist & Conductor Itzhak Perlman LIVE

·       Forbes.com: John Hewko explains polio’s legacy
A complete report will follow next week. Please share the good news with others.

I am also pleased to report that Rotary received extensive media coverage throughout 2013, with more than 626 news organizations in 35 countries featuring our humanitarian efforts. Of those, 58 stories appeared in top tier international news organizations, including nine out of the 10 most influential ranked by Forbes, including the Associated Press, The New York Times, BBC, Agence France Presse, The Washington Post and the Wall Street Journal.

Rotary’s role in the fight to end polio was highlighted in top-level, global media at unprecedented levels last year. And Rotary’s partnership with its celebrity ambassadors for polio eradication helped raise our digital visibility to new audiences via posts on endpolio.org and celebrity social media channels.

Enclosed are a report and summary of Rotary’s 2013 media coverage and a sharable compilation of the highlights with links to the coverage here. To view full articles, click on the headlines.

Best regards,

John Hewko,

General Secretary

Our guest speaker for the March 10, 2014 weekly Bathurst Rotary meeting was Mr. Brett Boudreau.  He currently is only 21 years of age, yet he told us of his diagnosis, his challenges, his battle, and his current triumph over living with a diagnosis of Schizophrenia while in his only in his first year of university.  His young life has to date been very difficult, but those challenges have resulted in a strong young man with wonderful insight into his illness.  He provided Bathurst Rotary with an interesting and powerful story of the difficulties he has overcome that have now resulted in his ability to help others with Mental Illness but most importantly to break down the barriers and stigma of Mental Illness by sharing his story.  Although such ability to do public speaking can be difficult for him, you never would have known it from the heart-wrenching story yet hopeful and positive outcome we received from him.   Thank-you Brett!

The Bathurst Rotary Club – Providing “Service Above Self” to the Chaleur Region for more than 75 years

First established in 1936, the Bathurst Rotary Club has played an important role in the Chaleur Region for more than 75 years now.

The local club is part of Rotary International, the world’s first service club organization, with more than 1.2 million members in over 34,000 clubs in more than 200 countries around the world. Rotary club members are volunteers who work locally, regionally, and internationally to combat hunger, improve health and sanitation, provide education and job training, promote peace, and eradicate polio under the motto ‘Service Above Self’.

Closer to home the Bathurst Rotary Club has helped fund an all-access playground in Coronation Park; recently purchased a new Venture Van, to provide transportation to those in need; regularly contributes to the Regional Hospital Centre and continues to support the Bathurst Volunteer Centre and Food Bank.

Alan Cotton is the President of the Bathurst Volunteer Centre and a long-time Rotarian.  He said it was his work with Rotary that first got him involved with the Volunteer Centre more than 20 years ago.

“I was asked to sit on the board,” he said.  “Then they asked me if I would like to stay on as president.  That was over 20 years ago.”

Cotton says Rotary “acts as a Big Brother to the Volunteer Centre”.

In addition to owning the building that the volunteer centre is located in, Rotary provides financial assistance and sponsors a very successfull food drive each fall.

Originally a place where different professionals would offer their services to those in need, thereby earning the name the Volunteer Centre, Cotton says it has grown to include four key components today.

Those components are a food bank, where families can get food items; a clothing bank, where clothing is available; a soup kitchen, that provides meals; and a Meals on Wheels program, that delivers meals to those in need.

Cotton said more than 450 families in the Chaleur Region use the services of the Volunteer Centre on a regular basis.

With more than 50 members, the Bathurst Rotary Club is able to continue to support projects, like the Volunteer Centre, through a series of fundraising initiatives that include – the Rotary World Travel Draw, the Rotary Radio Auction and the Paul Harris Awards Dinner.

Share Our Love for Camp Rotary

Camp Rotary is owned by the Rotary Club of Fredericton and is operated by Easter Seals New Brunswick.  Children who have special needs, physical disabilities, diabetes and cancer have an opportunity of a lifetime attending the camp.   Brandon Liston who is the Easter Seals representative is quoted at a recently held meeting of the Rotary Club of Fredericton saying,” Rotary Camp has provided all of us an opportunity to meet others just like us.  We are a family and I look forward to going every summer.  You put a smile on our faces.”
