The Bathurst Rotary Club – Providing “Service Above Self” to the Chaleur Region for more than 75 years

First established in 1936, the Bathurst Rotary Club has played an important role in the Chaleur Region for more than 75 years now.

The local club is part of Rotary International, the world’s first service club organization, with more than 1.2 million members in over 34,000 clubs in more than 200 countries around the world. Rotary club members are volunteers who work locally, regionally, and internationally to combat hunger, improve health and sanitation, provide education and job training, promote peace, and eradicate polio under the motto ‘Service Above Self’.

Closer to home the Bathurst Rotary Club has helped fund an all-access playground in Coronation Park; recently purchased a new Venture Van, to provide transportation to those in need; regularly contributes to the Regional Hospital Centre and continues to support the Bathurst Volunteer Centre and Food Bank.

Alan Cotton is the President of the Bathurst Volunteer Centre and a long-time Rotarian.  He said it was his work with Rotary that first got him involved with the Volunteer Centre more than 20 years ago.

“I was asked to sit on the board,” he said.  “Then they asked me if I would like to stay on as president.  That was over 20 years ago.”

Cotton says Rotary “acts as a Big Brother to the Volunteer Centre”.

In addition to owning the building that the volunteer centre is located in, Rotary provides financial assistance and sponsors a very successfull food drive each fall.

Originally a place where different professionals would offer their services to those in need, thereby earning the name the Volunteer Centre, Cotton says it has grown to include four key components today.

Those components are a food bank, where families can get food items; a clothing bank, where clothing is available; a soup kitchen, that provides meals; and a Meals on Wheels program, that delivers meals to those in need.

Cotton said more than 450 families in the Chaleur Region use the services of the Volunteer Centre on a regular basis.

With more than 50 members, the Bathurst Rotary Club is able to continue to support projects, like the Volunteer Centre, through a series of fundraising initiatives that include – the Rotary World Travel Draw, the Rotary Radio Auction and the Paul Harris Awards Dinner.

Share Our Love for Camp Rotary

Camp Rotary is owned by the Rotary Club of Fredericton and is operated by Easter Seals New Brunswick.  Children who have special needs, physical disabilities, diabetes and cancer have an opportunity of a lifetime attending the camp.   Brandon Liston who is the Easter Seals representative is quoted at a recently held meeting of the Rotary Club of Fredericton saying,” Rotary Camp has provided all of us an opportunity to meet others just like us.  We are a family and I look forward to going every summer.  You put a smile on our faces.”

On February 14, 2014, at the Delta Fredericton, the Rotary Club of Fredericton is hosting a Gala in support of Camp Rotary.   The evening will begin with a reception at 6:00 pm.  Roses will be provided for the ladies.  Mario Therieault will serenade us on his accordion.    Dinner will begin at 7:00 pm:

Roasted pumpkin with nutmeg cream soup

Herbed pork loin with merlot poached plum chutney

Classic crème brulee

Our Master of Ceremonies for the evening is Mayor Brad Woodside.  The “Meadowlarks” Fredericton’s Ladies Barbershop ensemble will provide dinner entertainment.

Hugh Cameron, auctioneer will entertain us with a live auction.   In addition to several wonderful packages, we have two tickets to see Michael Buble in concert in Toronto, Ontario June 28.  Air Canada will fly two to Toronto on June 27 with return on June 28.  Accommodations are included.

The evening will continue with the “Downtown Blues Band” providing us an opportunity to enjoy more live entertainment where we can chat and enjoy our friends and dance to midnight.

The cost of the evening is $125 per person.  A tax receipt of $75 dollars is provided.  Corporate tables are $900.

Tickets may be purchased by contacting Marion Brien at 459-8022, from members of the Rotary Club of Fredericton or by purchasing them at Westminster Books, King Street, Fredericton.

Dear Club Members, Interact and Rotaract Chairs,

2014 is starting across Zones 24-32 with a little fun – the first ever Zone 24-32 photo contest. RI Director Bryn Styles has endorsed an Avenues of Service – Zone Photo Contest.
This is an opportunity for the Rotarians across Zone 24-32 to share photos about the Rotary service projects and fellowship events they have held or will hold this Rotary year.

The prizes are simple, boasting rights as the best Rotary photographer in the zone, a certificate and the winning photos in each of the Avenues of Service posted on this website and hopefully district websites. Winners will be announced in mid- April.  So get out your SLR, point and shoot or phone camera and click away.

The most important rule of the contest is “have fun”.

The photographer must be a member of a Rotary, Rotaract or Interact club in Zone 24 or Zone 32. Photos submitted must be in JPEG file format with a maximum size of 3 MB and be submitted on or before March 31 2014. Each photographer may submit up to 3 photos that were taken between July 1 2013 and March 31 2014. Each photo will be submitted in one of the 5 Avenues of Service that the photo best illustrates.

What can you do? Share this email with your club members and clubs across your district. Send this message to Rotaract or Interact Clubs in your district.

The Zone 24-32 RPICs (Rotary Public Image Coordinators) will be the contest judges.

1.       The enter the contest and upload a photo click HERE

The Bathurst Rotary Club is proud to announce that the Celebration on Ice Show brought a first-class show to the community. We saw a lot of smiling faces on both the kids and adults alike. It gave a chance for local skaters to perform with world professionals which was truly priceless.
A tremendous thank-you to our sponsors.  Without such devoted generosity, shows like this would not be possible.
Thank-you to the public, attendees, and volunteers.  We hope the show was all you wished it would be.
What a great group of skaters and Bathurst is proud to have had you here!

Rotary.org
dear rotarian,
As a Rotary member, you make a difference in your community and internationally. Last year, because of the efforts of Rotarians and their friends and family voting daily from their computers, smartphones, and tablets, we received 2.5 million airline miles through United’s 10 Million Charity Miles Giveaway. The miles were used to change lives by helping with humanitarian projects, such as transporting children with birth defects to hospitals for treatments they can’t receive at home.

This year, we once again have the opportunity to take a minute to vote daily to make a big difference in the lives of others.

Vote daily for Rotary through 31 December at www.10millioncharitymiles.com/charity/26.

Let your friends and families know that they can vote or donate airline miles as well. Follow us on Facebook and Twitter for updates on the giveaway.

Thank you for all that you do!
