The Bathurst Rotary Club, for a number of years, have provided a free community BBQ in conjunction with the Anniversary of D-Day (held on the Saturday closest to the Anniversary date of June 6th).
This year, the North Shore Regiment, who had their named changed a few years back, are now being honoured and will have their original name restored at the event at the KC Center on Saturday June 7th.
In previous years, the veterans were marched in the the Memorial Site at the North end of Coronation Park. Chairs were set up and many if just stood nearby. The event started with a Master of Ceremonies (often Graham Wiseman was involved on behalf of the City and t he Legion). There was a moment of silence at 11am and after the ceremony everyone was invited to the BBQ
In recent years held at BHS cafeteria but was in the tennis court at the onset.
Our Rotary Club will do this year’s BBQ, for those who attend and for anyone who comes out, until the food is all gone, at the entrance to the KC Irving Center.

Wanted to share with all of you the overwhelming and
huge success of Anglophone North’s (Bathurst, Jacquet River, Dalhousie,
Tide Head) clothing drive in partnership with the New Brunswick
Association for Community Living.

Some of most rural schools and the Bathurst Community have managed to raise
close to 900 bags of clothing.  YES, 900 bags to support initiatives within
each school.  Tide Head has chosen the Children’s Wish Foundation, Jacquet
River – new books for their library and literacy within the Bathurst
Community.

When we first took on the project we never would have imagined it to be as successful as this.  The support of  some of our most rural schools and their communities was amazing.  Also adding that each community now has a greater understanding of the New Brunswick Association for Community Living, who they are and the support they offer to families and people with intellectual disabilities.

I would like to add a huge thank you for all the work and support from
our community schools people Cindy Courier and Aysleigh Lefurgey, and
NBACL board member Diane Cormier Northrup.  The Bathurst Education
Center team was also a great support!

We had some great BHS volunteers on Saturday along with many other community volunteers
always willing to pitch in to land a hand whenever needed. I am confident this will become an annual event.

Never underestimate the power and support from small communities!

Have a great week everyone.

As published in the Northern Light (Peter Assaff)

Paul Harris Awards Dinner set for May 14 at Gowan Brae

The Bathurst Rotary Club will be honouring three community leaders with the service club’s highest honour, a Paul Harris Fellowship, at a special ceremony and dinner on Wednesday, May 14 at Gowan Brae Golf and Country Club in Bathurst, N.B.

Mr. Don Kenny, Mr. Lévis Roy and Ms. Audrey Ronalds were all unanimous choices of the selection committee.

In addition to being made Paul Harris Fellows, a donation of $1,000 (U.S.) will be made in each recipients name to the Rotary Foundation, for a total of $3,000 (U.S.).

A valued member of the Nepisiguit Sports Lodge for close to 30 years, Don Kenny volunteers countless hours each year to allow snowmobilers to get the most out of the winter months by ensuring the trail system is one that residents and visitors alike can be proud of.  A long-time leader with the First South Bathurst Scout Troop, he was also a valued coach with the Bathurst Minor Baseball association.

The owner of Épicerie Frenette in Beresford, Lévis Roy is known as much for his community involvement as he is for his smart business sense.  Having grown his business from one employee to 40 over the last twenty years, he has also provided generous support to schools throughout the Chaleur Region; youth hockey, baseball and soccer programs; ATV and snowmobile clubs in the region; and has been a strong supporter of the Jeux de l’Acadie/Acadian Games.

A tireless volunteer, Audrey Ronalds devotes her time to helping youth, seniors, veterans and the less fortunate in our community.  Her many initiatives include the Literacy Bridges Reading Program, Robert L. Knowles Veterans Unit Visit A Hero Program and a Provincial Artisan and Craft Exposition.  She also sits on the board of directors for the New Brunswick Association of Community Living, is the Provincial Chairperson for the Breakfast for Learning, a committee member of the District Health Advisory Council and is the chairperson of the Bathurst Rotary Club’s Literacy Committee.

Established in 1957 the award, named for the founder of Rotary International, honours individuals who have made substantial contributions to humanitarian and educational causes while being leaders in community service.

Tickets for this year’s event are available for Bathurst Rotary Club members and at Lakeview Inns and Suites at a cost of $33.

This year’s guest speaker will be Nancy McKay.

Founded in 1905 the Rotary Club has grown to become the largest service club in the world.  This year’s Paul Harris Award winners will be joining distinguished ranks.  Mother Theresa, Prince Philip, Ronald Reagan and Clint Eastwood are among those who have also received the honor.

Rotary International is the world’s first service club organization. Made up of more than 32,000 clubs in more than 200 countries and geographical areas throughout the world, its more than 1.2 million members volunteer their time and talent to further the Rotary motto, Service Above Self.

In addition to supporting Rotary projects throughout the world, the Rotary Club of Bathurst has been instrumental in developing the all-access City of Bathurst Rotary Children’s Playground in Coronation Park, purchased the Rotary Venture Van, developed the Bathurst Volunteer Centre, and provided funds to help purchase a wheelchair ramp and an elevator for the Bathurst Aquatic Centre and an elevator for Holy Family Church.  Proud supporters of the Chaleur Regional Hospital Foundation and the B. E. S. T. group, the Bathurst Rotary Club also contributes to safe grad at Bathurst High School, provides scholarships for students at BHS and École Secondaire Nepisiguit, sends a local student to the nation’s capital each year as part of the Adventures in Citizenship program, supports the Bathurst Area School Milk Fund, local school playgrounds and school libraries.

Joel Aubie, Chef and Owner of Jobie’s Mobile Kitchen, is originally from Bathurst, New Brunswick and has spent a number of years cooking his way across Canada including his first culinary job at Chez Luc in his hometown and then graduating from the Culinary Institute of Canada on Prince Edward Island, to cooking at Vineland Winery in Ontario and abroad cooking on a tall ship through the waters of the Caribbean.  Joel eventually set his sights on the West Coast of Vancouver Island in 2004, where he ultimately became the Head Chef at Shelter Restaurant in Tofino, BC. Over the course of his career, Joel’s successes have also branched out to include such endeavours as being chosen as a contestant on the Food Network’s Top Chef Canada Season 2.

After achieving the goals he had set out to accomplish on the west coast and missing home on the east coast, he and his girlfriend /business partner Melanie McLean, also originally from Bathurst, decided to pack up their belongings, including their two dogs, GiGi and Chula to make the long trip back home to the Maritimes. In the Snap on Tool Truck they purchased with the intent of making Jobie’s Mobile Kitchen a reality, they moved back home to Bathurst in the summer of 2012.

They have since converted the truck to become Jobie’s Mobile Kitchen, a modern Food Truck experience for the people of Bathurst and the Chaleur Region. They will be serving gourmet street food with locally sourced products and globally inspired flavors.

I am also pleased to report that Rotary received extensive media coverage throughout 2013, with more than 626 news organizations in 35 countries featuring our humanitarian efforts. Of those, 58 stories appeared in top tier international news organizations, including nine out of the 10 most influential ranked by Forbes, including the Associated Press, The New York Times, BBC, Agence France Presse, The Washington Post and the Wall Street Journal.

Rotary’s role in the fight to end polio was highlighted in top-level, global media at unprecedented levels last year. And Rotary’s partnership with its celebrity ambassadors for polio eradication helped raise our digital visibility to new audiences via posts on endpolio.org and celebrity social media channels.
