Paul Harris Awards Dinner set for May 6 at Dannys Inn and Conference Centre

The Bathurst Rotary Club will be honouring three community leaders with the service club’s highest honour, a Paul Harris Fellowship, at a special ceremony and dinner on Wednesday, May 6 at Danny’s Inn and Conference Centre in Bathurst, N.B.

Mr. Cletus Doucet, Mr. Emile Babineau and Mrs. Carmel Hickey have all been chosen to be recognized for their community service.

In addition to being made Paul Harris Fellows, a donation of $1,000 (U.S.) will be made in each recipients name to the Rotary Foundation, for a total of $3,000 (U.S.).

Established in 1957 the award, named for the founder of Rotary International, honours individuals who have made substantial contributions to humanitarian and educational causes while being leaders in community service.

Tickets for this year’s event are available from Bathurst Rotary Club members and at Lakeview Inns and Suites at a cost of $35.

This year’s guest speaker will be Roger L. Brown,  Assistant Commissioner New Brunswick RCMP Commanding Officer.

Founded in 1905 the Rotary Club has grown to become the largest service club in the world.  This year’s Paul Harris Award winners will be joining distinguished ranks.  Mother Theresa, Prince Philip, Ronald Reagan and Clint Eastwood are among those who have also received the honor.

Rotary International is the world’s first service club organization. Made up of more than 32,000 clubs in more than 200 countries and geographical areas throughout the world, its more than 1.2 million members volunteer their time and talent to further the Rotary motto, Service Above Self.

In addition to supporting Rotary projects throughout the world, the Rotary Club of Bathurst has been instrumental in developing the all-access City of Bathurst Rotary Children’s Playground in Coronation Park, purchased the Rotary Venture Van, developed the Bathurst Volunteer Centre, and provided funds to help purchase a wheelchair ramp and an elevator for the Bathurst Aquatic Centre and an elevator for Holy Family Church.  Proud supporters of the Chaleur Regional Hospital Foundation and the B. E. S. T. group, the Bathurst Rotary Club also contributes to safe grad at Bathurst High School, provides scholarships for students at BHS and École Secondaire Nepisiguit, sends a local student to the nation’s capital each year as part of the Adventures in Citizenship program, supports the Bathurst Area School Milk Fund, local school playgrounds and school libraries.

Jim clearly pointed out the challenges of the Transition Centre and its objective to refocus “at risk” students to continuing their education.

The challenge in a nut shell is to find a way to connect with students whose values are not in line with that of the school and the general population. What we see as an opportunity and what the students at risk see as an opportunity are entirely different… An example Jim provided, was that of an older truck, Jim saw it as an opportunity to rebuild, repair and recondition, some of the students at risk saw it as the value of 30 lbs of copper that could be removed from the truck and sold…without permission.

The Centre continues to reach out to students in hopes of being able to influence them into a generally more acceptable set of values. The program receives funding support which is greatly appreciated. Jim feels volunteers willing to work with these at risk students would be of great value.

Peter Gummer (geologist), provided information on how Junior Mining companies raise funds:

Peter has been in the mining industry for over 30 years, starting as a geologist moving on to be a promoter for a number of juniors, Claude Resources SK and First Narrows Resources NB. In heading up a junior funding is necessary and the best way to get funding is with OPM (Other People’s Money. This is achieved by a company qualifying to be listed on the Junior exchange and raising money through selling shares. Raising money through shares on the stock markets is very difficult in the mining industry in general is in a down cycle, with both majors and juniors having challenges raising funds. Peter is optimistic for a turnaround in the future, with well-funded and managed companies weathering the storm and doing well …further down the road

Hector spoke on the Constitution, Indian Act and their impact on women. Hector had been a delegate during the Trudeau government’s amendment of the Constitution in 1983.
